Sister ships Hakonesan Maru and Hakubasan Maru except that the first ship lacked the pryamide masts constructed of angle iron and lattice kingposts. Call sign JDUC. Laid down by Mitsai Busan Kaisha Ltd, Tama, Japan on 25 July 1928, launched on 14 March 1929, completed on 29 May 1929, requisitioned by navy as transport on 3 June 1938, registered as auxiliary transport on 15 October 1941, torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine USS Greenling (SS-213) around 15 nautical miles east of Haramachi-shi, Japan on 18 October 1942 and stricken on 15 November 1942. Gross tonnage 6,674 tons, under deck 5,922 tons, net tonnage 4,079 tons and as dimensions 437.6 x 56.5 x 33.0 x 13.6 (light)-26 (loaded) feet. Diesel propulsion, 2 screws, horsepower 951 nhp/4,200 bhp, range 21,000 nautical miles/13 knots and speed 13(normal cruising)-15.5/135rpm (maximum) knots. Six watertight bulkheads.
