Preceded by Shikishma-class succeeded by Mikas. Building as battleship orderedunder the 1897 Naval Programme by John Brown&Company, Clydebank, Scotland, laid down on 1 August 1898, launched on 13 March 1899, commissioned on 28 April 1900, reclassified as 1st class coastal defence ship on 1 September 1921, reclassified as training annex submarine salvage ship on 1 April 1923, converted into a submarine salvage ship between 1 February-August 1925 and 1926-October 1927, re-service since 1928, reclassified as repair ship on 16 August 1937, since November 1937 used as transport, converted into repair ship which was completed on 18 December 1938 and while underway from Singapore to Kure torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine USS Salmon in the night of 25/26 May 1942 and stricken on 15 June 1942. Modified British Formidable-class design.
