Ottoman commander-in-chief and advisor Hobart Pasha in 1877

Augsutus Charles Hobart-Hampden Pasha (1 April 1822 Walton-on-the-Wolds, Leicestershire, England-19 June 1886 Milan, Kingdom of Italy). In service of the British Royal Navy 1835-1862 ending his career with the rank of captain. In 1867 appointed as naval advisor of the Ottoman Sultan and cemane commander-in-chief of the fleet ranked rear-admiral (Bahriye Livasi). In 1874 reinstated on the British Navy Directory but at the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877 (1) reappointed in Ottoman service. In 1881 he became Mushir (personal advisor of the Sultan in military affairs) until his death.

1. This was the so-called Russo-Turkish War (24 April 1877-3 March 1878 between the Ottoman Empire and a coalition led by the Russian Empire consisting further of Romania, Serbia and Montenegro. The latter three principalities claimed after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire their formal independence and further more became Bulgaria an autonomous state.
