Preceded by Nevada-class succeeded by New Mexico-class. Nearly final version of the design. In contrary to earlier preliminary designs was shifting the underwater side armour from the shell to an internal bulkhead. Contined the concept ‘all-or-nothing’ armour of the Nevada-class with increasing the thickness where really was needed and reducing elsewhere where less needed. USS Pennsylvania (BB38) and Arizona (BB39) were built to dis design.
Dimensions 600 (waterline) x 97’0 1/2”(outside armor) x 28’10” (mean draft) feet. Displacement 31,400 tons. Long. Coefficent ,629 (9 replaced in pencil by 7). Armament 4x3-35.56cm/14” B.K.R. guns, 22-12.7cm/5” quick firing guns and 4 submerged torpedo tubes.
Turbine propulsion, twelve boilers divided over 3 rooms, speed 21 knots. Range 8,000 nautical miles/10 knots.
Armour. Main side belt: widt etx. 17’4 5/8”, depth below water line 8’11 8/8, thickness 131/2-13 1/4-8”. Barbettes heavy part 13”, light part 4 1/2”. Turrets thickness port 18”, sides 9-10”, rear 9”, roof 5”. Conning tower proper, thickness 16”. Fire control 16”. Conning tower tube heavy 16”, light 6”. Uptake protection 13”. Protective deck, total 120#. Splinter deck, total thickness 80#-60#.
