Part of Project 651 named by NATO Juliett-class preceded by Echo-class succeeded by Charlie-class. Designed in end 1950s by a team with as chairman Abram Samuilovich Kassatsier. Building planned of 35 boats but 19 were cancelled and 16 completed. Laid down by Krasnoye Sormovo Shipyard No. 112, Gorky on 25 January 1961, launched on 30 April 1963, commissioned on 25 December 1965, renamed B-68 on 25 July 1977, BS-68 on 19 April 1990, stricken on 3 July 1992 and broken up.
