Grytviken nowadays lying beside the Albatross
Originally built as the screw steam trawler Viola H868 by Cook, Welton&Gemmell Ltd., Beverley, England in February 1906 with Hull, England as homeport, owner Hellyer Steam Fishing Company, in the First World War serving in the Royal Navy as the anti submarine trawler HMS Viola FY614, sold to Massey&Sons in 1918, sold to A/S Sandsfjord Trawfiskelskap, Norway and renamed Kapduen in Norwegian service in 1919, sold to the Cie. Argentina de Pesca S.A., Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1926, converted into a whale catcher at Sandefjord, Norway in 1927, as the Dias serving at the Grytviken whaling station, South Georgia until 1964. She served a sealer, for towing the carcasses of whales and transport of for instance sea elephant blubber. Gross tonnage 167 tons, under deck 133 tons, net tonnage 111 and as dimensions 1-8.5 x 21.6 x 11.5 feet.
