Former Dutch screw steam ship 4th class Zr. Ms. Bonaire, dry docked at Den Helder, Netherlands 29 June 2011



The screwsteamship Bonaire 4th class was built at the Nederlandse Stoomboot Maatschppij at Fijenoord, on stocks 1876 and launched 1877. Dimensions were 45 x 9 x 3,60m, displacement 850 tons, speed 9,2 knots, 84 men and armed with 1-15cm and  3-12cm guns. She was commissioned 1 May 1880 and served as fisherypatrol in the North Sea and at Curcacao and Bonaire. Since 12 May 1893 she was called a schooner instead of screwsteamship 4th class.

In 1902 fitted out at the naval yard at Hellevoetsluis as hotel for the torpedoservice. In 1915 at Hellevoetsluis fitted out to serve at the Naval Engineers school at Dordrecht, August 1923 taken to Hellevloetsluis when the school at Dordrecht was closed and transferred to the boarding naval school at Delfzijl and renamed Abel Tasman where se served until stricken. Since 1996 she is lying at Den Helder waiting to be restored as one of the few survivors of the 19th century in the world today.
