At Dundee was recently the merchant ship Eastern Monarch of extra ordinary dimensions launched, namely 239 x more as 40 feet, a capacity of 3,000 ton and a value estimated on 600,000 Dutch guilders.(1)

Somes’ East India Cervice at the yard of Alexander Stephen and Sons at the Clyde . Three years later was she lost by fire while returning from her maiden voyage used as troop transport and carrying with her merchandise. The report of the annual meeting, volume 37, 1867 of the British Association for the Advancement of Science mentioned that she had a measurement of 1848 tons and was classed for 14 years as A 1 in Lloyd’s Register being in her time one of the largest ships in this class.
