The strength of the navies of Denmark, Norway and Sweden in 1854

For years was in the Netherlands a magazine published dealing with maritime affairs.

It was expected that 4 Swedish ships of the line and 6 frigates and 4 steamships were fitted out and to join a Norwegian squadron, once the ‘fairway’ was opened. One of the ships of the line was to be commanded by prince Oscar. The officers were ordered to gather 21 February. The editor judged the rumours that the Russian navy wanted to demonstrate/manoeuvre off Stockholm unbelievable. The fairway was as far as around 20 miles sometimes dangerous or difficult although there was no danger for floating ice.

The Scandinavian countries collected a considerable force to protect their neutrality.

There were in Sweden just like in Norway 10.000 experienced sailors available of which just a tenth in active service. This number was now increased with 1150 men.

Steamships: 6 Danish, 5 Norwegian, 12 Swedish

screw steamships: 1 Danish

transports: 22 Swedish
