Spanish privateering according to the Dutch newspaper ‘s Hertogenbossche Courant dated 24 December 1779

According to an item dated Madrid 27 November was expected that as result of recalling don Louis Cordova out of the combined fleet and the vigilance of don Barceló expected men that Gibraltar was too surrender and that the Spanish navy combined with her ally France could force England to sign a peace treaty. The Royal Junta and the Commerce Consulate of Barcelona decided both that privateers fitted out on their account got a reward of 1,000 piasters for a prize of 100 tons or larger, 500 piasters for a prize of 50 tons and 250 piasters for a prize smaller as 50 tons. As a result of this rewards were at the end of October all ready 3 privateers well fitted out with men and guns departed out of the harbour. The ships were indicated as Nieuwnagels or translated as new nails. If this means that they were newly fitted out or newly built I dont know wit certainty.

Note
1. Don Antonio Barceló y Pont de la Terra (Palma, Majorca 1 October 1717 - Palma, Majorca 30 January 1797) who used floating batteries during this siege/blockade.
