At Lloyds office the fear became more and more visible that a war between Mexico and the USA resulting in privateering along the West coast was a threat for the merchant trade shipping. The assurors increased their premiums for the shipping between England and the USA unless it was agreed that they were responsible in case of losses caused by privateers.
