An item dated Paris 22 August reported that the Polynesian owned by the Mesageries Maritimes underway from Bizerta towards Saloniki with on board Serbian troops struck a mine and sunk on 10 August with 19 men killed.(1)

This site calls also her the Plate ship and Polynesia or le Polynesien stating that she was in French use and torpedoed by a German submarine. Another website http://www.divernet.com/Wrecks/wrecks_general/198513/top_wrecks_of_malta_gozo.html for divers also said that she was torpedoed namely by the German submarine UC 22. And finally a third divers site http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?124537 supplied more detail. She was build in 1890 at the shipyard of Messageries Maritimes at La Ciotat and owned by Messageries Maritimes or Compagnies des MM at Paris. With a gross tonnage of 6,659 tons were her dimensions 152,5 x 15,1 x 1,4 metres. Her triple expansion engines supplied 7,500 hp allowing a speed of 1,5 knots. Torpedoed by the German submarine UC-22 7 miles off Grand Harbour, Valetta, Malta.
