French freighter Gallia torpedoed according to the Dutch newspaper Vlissingse Courant dated 10 October 1916

An item reported that the French freighter Gallia wit a net tonnage of 5,895 tons on 4 October was torpedoed by a submarine. Of the around 2,000 French and Serbian soldiers on board were according to the latest tidings 1,362 men saved. The Gallia was an auxiliary cruiser used for troop transports. The torpedo hit the ammunition depot and the explosion destroyed all telegraphy equipment so communication became impossible. On the 5th sighted a French cruiser the lifeboats and immediately were patrol vessels ordered to assist.
