Soviet Union founding naval base in Syria according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuwsblad voor Sumatra dated 9 October 1957

An item reported that usual reliable sources in Istanbul said that Syria accepted the Soviets offer to build a navy base in Latakia. This was a result of the negotiations at Damascus between vice admiral Kotow commanding officer of the Soviet squadron which recently visited Syria and Syrian authorities.
