Stricken US warships had to be converted in to merchant ships according to the Dutch newspaper De Tijd dated 4 January 1922

An item dated Paris 4 January referred to the French newspaper Matin which received tidings from Washington that the US Maritime Commission decided that all warships destined to be stricken were to be converted into merchant ships. In this manner was prevented that they were used for war purposes.
