An item referred to the magazine U.S.R. dated 1 June 1939 reporting that as a response to the Japanese (1) battleships of 42.000-46.000 tons now being built the USA decided to built 2-45.000 ton battleships with a main armament of 40,6cm guns.(2). Estimated building costs for each ship 93.000.000 US dollars.
Notes
1. This must be the Yamato-class of which the Yamato and the Musashi were completed as battleships, their sister ship Shinano converted into aircraft carrier and the fourth one never realized. In fact as the displacement of the two battleships much larger as it was known namely 65.027 tonnes-71.659 (full load) tonnes with a main armament of 3x3-46cm (18.1”) guns.
2. Probably the USS Iowa (BB-61) and New Jersey (BB-62)with a displacement of 45.000 tons and 9-16”guns. The Iowa-class was extended with another two ships namely the USS Missouri (BB-63) and the USS Wisconsin (BB-64). The USS Montana (BB-65) and USS Kentucky (BB-66) were never completed.
