Russian naval strength according to the Dutch newspaper Schiedamsche Courant dated 29 December 1849
The
Russian navy in actual service consisted according to some newspapers of 156
ships and vessels including 4-120 gun ship of the lines, 6-100à110 gun ship of
the lines, 26-80à90 gun ships of the line, 18-70à80 gun ships of the line, 28
frigates, 40 corvettes, schooners and brigs and 36 steamboats of war. The fleet
was divided in 5 divisions. Their crews mainly consisted of men coming from the
Russian inland especially Polish and Israel (Jewish?).
