French naval movements against Spain according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 25 April 1823

Paris, 20 April. The government seized 16 April the edition of the newspaper Indicateur of Bordeaux with the news item that Spanish privateers were cruising in the Bay of Gascogne which tiding was false. The attorney of the crown ordered the persecution of the publisher. The minister of navy ordered to arm the ship of the line l'Eole and the frigate la Circée and to sent both ships with 18 vessels waiting to ready to cruise against the Spanish 'pirates'. Another squadron consisting of the le Colosse, flagship of admiral Hamelin, l'Eylau, la Revanche, la Galathée, l'Eurydice, la Themis and several smaller armed vessels were to depart towards Bourbon and Isle-de-France.

A letter from Brest dated 17 April reported that the evening of the day before the corvette la Zelée arrived which left Guadeloupe 19 March with the tidings that rear admiral Meynard de Laforge of the le Jean Bart captured a Spanish ship with 2.000.000 piasters on board destined for the government o the cortes.
