Turkish navy not interested in modern French inventions according to the Dutch newspaper Goessche Courant in 1852

According to the local Dutch newspaper Goessche Courant dated 27 May 1852 sent the French government the screw steamship of war Charlemagne to Turkey allowing the Turkish Navy Department to visit the ship. The intention behind this visit was to give the Turkish navy the possibility to see if modern inventions could be used in the Turkish navy. However when she tried to pass the Dardanelles was this refused by the Porte according to the Treaty of 13 July 1840 which also excluded French warships from this passing. It’s not known why the Porte first decided to accept this ‘present’ and afterwards refused the passing. The Charlemagne in the meantime returned to Smyrna where she arrived 9 May.
