Dutch 5th charter-frigate Monnikendam 1782-1797

Squadron commanded by rear admiral Van Kruyne in 1782-1783 off Rammekens

This 5ht rate was built for the Admiralty of the Noorderkwartier by J. Hand at Enkhuizen in 1782 and finally captured while commanded by captain Lancaster by the Royal British Navy on 11October 1797 during the battle of Camperdown. but lost off Zoutelande. Dimensions 149 9/11 x 40 4/11 x 15 2/11 armed with 40-44 guns and a crew numbering, 270 men. Commanding officer March 1783-May 1786 captain M. Kuyper. The Dutch newspaper Goudasche courant dated 18 October 1797 referred to a eye witness which assured the press that he saw the stranding of the frigate on the Saturday before off Zoutelande. Despite throwing the masts over board she remained stranded. He also said that just a few crew membvers survived this disaster.
