An item dated Den Helder 1st reported that the afternoon before the British brig Mary&Ann loaded with coal stranded against the sea dyke caused by a strong wind near the East battery. The hard wind and high seas prevented her refloating by the Dutch tug Archimedes captain De Liefde. Her crew left in the evening the ship which was heavily leaking fearing that she could be each moment be smashed into pieces. The next morning went the crew to salvage everything of value on board. The ship seemed to be lost.
