American whaler John Wells repaired at Sydney, Australia according to the Whalemen’s Shipping List dated Tuesday 8 December 1863

An item reported that the bark John Wells captain Fisher of New Bedford arrived in August at Sydney, Australia heavily leaking. There she was dry docked and where her bottom was cleaned and repaired. On 10 September was she nearly ready to depart for sea again. Her cargo was sold although the exact quantity was yet not known. The last time Fisher sent a report she had 670 barrels sperm oil and 120 barrels whale oil on board.
