Italian battleship Roma 1938-1943

Of the Littorio-class. Laid down at Cantieri Riuniti dell; Adriatico on 18 September 1938, launched on 9 June 1940, commissioned on 14 June 1892, lacking fuel was she not employed, taken in service for strengthening the air defence of Italian towns, heavy damaged during Allied at attacks on La Spezia, Italy, repaired at Genoa July-August 1943, leaving Italy towards Malta to surrender to the Allied forces was she sunk by German aircraft in the Strait of Bonifacio with the loss of 1.253 men on 9 September 1943. The wreck was found back in June 2012. 

Displacement 41.650/40.922 long tons (standard)-46.215 tons/45.485 long tons and as dimensions 240,68 (overall) x 32,82 x 9,6 metres or 790 x 107.7 x 31 feet. The 4 steam turbines and 8 Yarrow boilers supplied via 4 shafts 128.000 shp allowing a speed of 30 knots. She could carry 3 aircraft with her for which she was fitted out with a catapult at the stern. The armour consisted of a 35cm/14” thick belt, a 16,2cm/6.4” thick deck while the gun turrets and conning tower were protected by respectively 35cm/14” and 26cm/10”. The armament consisted of 3x3-38,1cm/15.0” /50 guns, 4x3-15,2cm/6.0” /55 guns, 4x1-12cm/4/7” /40 guns for illumination purposes, 12x1-9cm/3.5” /50 anti aircraft guns, 8x2&4x1-3,7cm/3.5” /54 guns and 10x2-2cm/0.79” /65 guns.
