Defence of South African harbours to be improved according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad 1939 no. 2

An item referred to the magazine Marine Rundschau dated November 1938 reporting that South Africa possessing just a limited army needed to be as modern and heavy armed as possible. The defence of Port Elizabeth and East London was also to be regulated. Cape Town and Durban were to defended by 38cm/14.9” guns making both harbours ‘battleship proof”. Until then were the heaviest coastal guns of 23,5cm/9.25”. The army was to be strengthened and aged British aircraft handed over to the air force.
