Japanese seaplane tender Kinugasa Maru 1935-1945


Laid down by Kawasaki Shipbuilding, Kobe, Japan for account of the Kokusai Kisen K.K. Line on 10 August 1935. Launched on 26 December 1935. Completed on 28 February 1936, purchased by the Japanese navy on 14 August 1937, registered becoming a transport in service of the Yokosuka Naval District on 15 August 1937, converted into a seaplane tender at the Yokosuka Navy Yard since 27 September 1937, required by Japanese navy on 5 November 1941, fitted out at the Nippon Kokan K.K.; shipyard between 19-20 November 1941, reclassified as transport on 28 April 1938, returned to owners in October 1939, torpedoed by American submarines Hawkbill and Baya and sunk on 7 October 1944 and stricken on 10 March 1945.

Displacement as 6.808 (original)-8.407 ton (seaplane tender) and as dimensions 139,0 x 18,6 x 9,0 metres. Speed 15 knots. Fitted out with 1-7.600hp diesel. Armament as sea tender 6-12cm/4.7” 10th Year high angle naval guns and fitted out for 4 Type 94 Kawanishi E7K2 and 8 Type Nakajima E8N2 float planes.
