The Russian 1.000 tons Volga decked barges according to a CIA report dating from the 1950s

An item referred to the publication Susa Novykh Tipoc dlya Bol’shoy Volgi, written by A.P. Strakhov, Moscow 1954 dealing with new kind of ships to serve on the Volga. The river channel would in the future be changed caused by constructing by hydroelectric power projects and corresponding attendant reservoirs. So in this manner were new types of river ships needed including tent barges. At the time of the publication were large numbers of 1.000 ton deadweight tent barges used for transporting grain and cargo subject to moisture damage. The hull was fitted out with double sides and 900mm high double bottom while the enclosures were made of 1,5cm thick corrugated galvanized iron with a height of 2,6 metres. In the housing were on each side 4 doors with a width of 4,2 metres and in the roof were 4 hatches with as dimensions 3,25 x 6 metres. In the stern housing was the crew accommodation located. Dimensions 75,0 (between perpendiculars) x 15,0 (moulded) x 2,0 (depth amidships) x 1,3 (mean loaded) metres and a light displacement of 235 tons/meter.
