The Russian Volga ice breakers according to a CIA report dating from the 1950s

An item referred to the publication Susa Novykh Tipoc dlya Bol’shoy Volgi, written by A.P. Strakhov, Moscow 1954 dealing with new kind of ships to serve on the Volga. The river channel would in the future be changed caused by constructing by hydroelectric power projects and corresponding attendant reservoirs. So in this manner were new types of river ships needed including river icebreakers. Their tasks was to hasten the breaking up of the ice in the river and to lengthen the navigation season. In the meantime the Volga and the Don built and already commissioned in 1951. They could be used as tugs during the summer season when fitted out with propeller cows to increase their power. The machinery consisted of w direct-current electric engines while also the auxiliary machinery and equipment was electrically driven. Furthermore were icebreaker-tugs built with reinforced framing, especially in the bow, and which were to be used in thin ice or cooperate together with the icebreakers. One example the 600hp Kalashnikov was in the winter of 1952-1953 active.
