Japanese whale factory ship Tonan Maru No. 2 1937-1970
Laid down by Osaka Iron Works, Osaka, Japan for account of Nippon Suisan K.K./Fisheries Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan on 27 May 1937, launched on 1 May 1938, completed on 23 September 1938, acquired by the Japanese Imperial Navy on 4 November 1941, sunk during an American air attack on Truk Lagoon on 18 February 1944, salvaged and repaired in 1951, again active in the whaling, renamed later Tonan Maru and begin of breaking her up in April 1970. Gross tonnage 19.625 and as dimensions 534.8 x 74.6 x 56.8 feet. 14 (light)-35.6 (loaded) feet. Speed 13 (cruising 90 rpm)-15 maximum 110 rpm) knots. Twin screw. Oil fuelled reciprocating engines. Range with speed of 14 knots and fuel bunker capacity of 2.300 ton was 18.000 nautical miles.
