Soviets modernizing former Italian battleship Giulio Cesare at Nikolayev, Ukraine to a CIA report dated 7 April 1951

An item reported that the former Italian battleship Giulio Cesare in mid-March 1951 was lying in the harbour of Nikolayev, Ukraine where her forward superstructure and anti-aircraft defence was modernized and fitted out with radar equipment.

1. Conti di Cavour-class, preceded by Dante Alighieri and succeeded by Andrea Doria-class. Laid down by Gio. Ansaldo&C., Genoa, Italy on 24 June 1910, launched on 15 October 19111, completed on 7 June 1914, commissioned on 7 June 1914, handed over to the Soviet Union on 4 February 1949, renamed Novorossiysk, commissioned on 6 February 1949 and sunk by an explosion on 29 October 1955.
