Malta preparing for Turkish invasion according to the Dutch newspaper Oprechte Haerlemsche courant dated 16 June 1722

An item dated Malta 1st May reported that Maltese warships and galleys captured within 12 months 11 Barbarian ships including 2 of Tunis armed with 36 respectively 45 guns. Totally 617 Turkish and Moorish crew members were taken prisoner and forced to work on the fortifications of Malta. The Grand Master had ordered to strengthen the fortifications in such manner that hardly nothing was to feared from the sultan. The warships were however not sent out on cruising but stayed in the harbour and the galleys were to return home to be available for a possible Turkish invasion.
