The California Grey Whale (Eschrichtius Robustus) is also known as ray whale, gray back whale, Pacific gray whale being a baleen whale migrating each between the feeding and the breeding grounds. They can reach an age of 55-70 years although one female whale was estimated to be even between the 75-80 years. Length 14,9 metres/49 feet and a weight of maximum 41 tonnes. Dark slate-gray skin with gray patches and white mottling. Separated in eastern North Pacific (North America) and western North Pacific (Asian) populations, the latter is endangered. Commercial whaling started in the winter of 18451847 by the American whalers Hibernia and the United States in the Magdalena Bay followed by whalers in the next winters until the whaling temporarily stopped while inferior quality and low price of the whale oil just like the low quality and quantity of the whalebone prevented a commercial success. Between 1855-1865 however the grey whale whaling started again. In Asia was the grey whale especially hunted by the Japanese with as result that the western grey whale nearly extincted
