An item dated 29th June referred to tidings received from Malta reporting that Barbarian privateers had been active again in large numbers. Maltese galleys and other warships joined in the meantime the Spanish fleet in attacking Algiers. The Maltese government responded immediately by fitting out two chebecqs and a galliot lately captured from Tripoli and the Barbarian pirates were forced to retreat. An Algerian vessel loaded with rice, caffee and other stores was captured off Candia and her crew numbering 54 men taken prisoner.
