Allied aircraft did spotted much Japanese military in the Melanesian area according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 18 May 1942

An item reported that allied aircraft scouting in the Melanesian area hardly saw any Japanese small unit. It was concluded that apparently the heavy unites were withdrawn probably for an offensive against Midway Islands or the Aleutians.
