An item reported that the German surface raider which attacked on 10 May a merchant vessel on the Indian Ocean was probably the German raider E which earlier seemed to be active in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. The summary No. 158 dated 17 May reported that a British merchant ship underway from Freetown, Sierra Leone towards Colombo, Ceylon on a geographical position was around 1.400 miles west north west of Freemantle, USA was attacked. Her crew abandoned her after she was shelled.(1)

Built as the cargo ship Santa Cruz for the Oldenburg Portuguese Line (OPDR), Hamburg, Germany built by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany in 1938, purchased by the German Kriegsmarine in winter 1939-1940 and converted into the raider Thor, commissioned in March 1940, known as HSK-4 and Schiff 10 and destroyed by fire at Yokohama, Japan on 30 November 1942. Main armament 6-15cm/5.9” SK l/45 guns.
