British battleships HMS Triumph and Majestic lost within 2 days according to the Dutch newspaper De Tijd dated 27 May 1915

An item dated Constantinople, Turkey 27 May reported unofficially that early in the morning of the same days the British battleship HMS Majestic (1) was destroyed off Sedul-Bahr. The HMS Triumph(2) destroyed the day before was torpedoed by a German submarine.

1. Laid down at the Pembroke Dockyard, England in February 1894, launched on 31 January 1895, completed in December 1895. Commissioned in December 1895 and torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-21 (1) off Cape Helles, Turkey on 27 May 1915. Of the Majestic-class consisting of the Majestic, Caesar, Hannibal, Illustrious, Jupiter, Magnificent, Mars, Prince George and Victorious, preceded by the HMS Renown and succeeded by the Canopus-class. Built under the Spencer Programme. In 1891 requested Controller rear admiral Jackie Fisher for a new 12cm battleship. As a response designed Director of Naval Construction William Henry White a 12.500 tons battleships with 4-12” guns and a 22,9cm/9” thick belt presenting this to the Board on 27 January 1892. The design of the Majestic-class was used by for instance Japan as a basic for the Shikishima-class and the Mikasa.

2. Laid down as the Libertad for Chilean account at Vickers, Sons&Maxim, Barrow-in-Furness on 26 February 1902, launched on 15 January 1903, completed in June 1904, commissioned on 21 June 1904, added to the China Station on 28 August 1913, laid up in reserve at Hong Kong, commissioned in August 1914 and finally sunk off the Gaba Tepe by the German submarine U-21 when she was firing at Ottoman fortifications in the Dardanelles on 25 July 1915. Building costs without armament 847.520 pond sterling. Of the Swiftsure-class consisting of the Swiftsure and the Triumph, preceded by the King Edward VII-class and succeeded by the Lord Nelson-class.
