An item reported that on 5 May an American merchant ship was abandoned by her crew on a distance of 120 miles south west of Noumea. New Caledonia. The ship was last seen on fire. Two days later was a second American merchant ship by an enemy submarine on a distance of 30 miles south of Noumea. The U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee stated that this was the first time that an enemy submarine was successful active in New Caledonia.
