New commander-in-chief of the British Eastern Fleet according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 27 March 1942

An item reported that admiral Layton (1) was relieved by admiral Somerville on the position of commander-in-chief of the British Eastern Fleet.(2)

Notes

1. Sir Geoffrey Layton (20 April 1844 Liverpool, England-4 September 1964 Portsmouth, England), served in the British Royal between 1899-1947 ending his career with the rank of admiral, commanded the Eastern Fleet between 1941-1942.

2. Sir James Fownes Sommerville (17 July 1882 Weybridge, Surrey, England-19 March 1949 Dinder House, Somerset, England), served in the Royal British Navy between 1897-1946 ending in the rank of Admiral of the Fleet, between 1942-1944 commanding the British Eastern Fleet.
