Dutch cruiser Hr.Ms. De Ruyter
An item reported that the Dutch destroyer HMS Kortenaer was sunk, the British destroyer HMS Electra disappeared and presumed to be sunk, the British destroyer HMS Jupiter and the Dutch cruisers Hr.Ms. De Ruyter and Java sunk, probably by mines. Nothing was heard of the Australian cruiser HMAS Perth and the American cruiser USS Houston after trying to pass Sunda Strait on 28 February. Presumed was that the British cruiser HMS Exeter, the British destroyer HMS Encounter and the American destroyer USS Pope were presumed to be sunk, since 1 March nothing was heard of them. The Dutch destroyer HMS Evertsen was beached and sunk. Nothing was heard of the British destroyer HMS Stronghold and the Australian sloop HMAS Yarra were also missing. ‘All other Allied’ warships present in the Java Sea were ‘known’ to be safe.
An item referred to observers which believed that in the Java Sea 1-8” Japanese cruiser and a destroyer were sunk and a second 8” cruiser damaged. Furthermore was reported that a Mogami-class cruiser was set on fire and 3 destroyers heavily damaged and left behind while sinking or on fire.
