Japanese force redrawn from Guadalcanal according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 27 August 1942

An item reported that on 23-24 August the Allied forces at Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) managed to hold their positions despite the shelling. Allied dive bombers damaged a Japanese destroyer. From the north came a Japanese naval force of which was earlier reported a cruiser set on fire, 1 destroyer and 4 additional ships left burning and the transport earlier reported as being hit was left abandoned when the Japanese left the scene.
