An item reported that the enemy had on 22 August around 53 submarines in the western part of the Atlantic ocean (from the longitude of the Azoren westwards). Two instead of one were in the Cape Henry-Cape lookout area and 11 instead of 10 in the Florida Straits-Eastern Caribbean area. The J.I.C. commented that within the next four days several westbound submarines now to the eastward of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia would arrive of the US north and middle Atlantic coastline and an increase of the German activities was to be expected. The enemy submarine which was reported in No. 252 and 254 as to be attacked off the Brazilian coast off Bahia on 18 August by aircraft was either damaged or sunk. Two days later attacked US aircraft in the same area a second submarine. If both submarines were indeed sunk lost the Germans until now in August totally 9 submarines.
