British torpedo gunboat HMS Boomerang visited the Dutch East Indies in 1904

The Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Zeemacht 1903-1904 reported that the British torpedo gunboat HMS Boomerang visited the Dutch East Indies harbours Surabaya between 30-31 August 1904, Tandjong Priok between 1-3 September 1904 and Sabang between 10-12 September 1904. The Soerabaijasch handelsblad dated 25 August referred to the Javabode announcing the visit on short notice of the British cruiser 3rd class Ringarooma (2.575 ton) and destroyer Boomerang (735 ton) coming from Australia. The edition dated 2 September reported her departure from Surabaya towards Batavia and described her as a torpedo boat commanded by H.H. Smijth. The Bataviaasch nieuwsblad dated 2 September called her commanding officer Smyth, she measured 735 ton, armed with 2 guns and a crew numbering 94 men (including 7 officers), coming from Thursday Island via Surabaya. The edition dated 5 September reported she departed towards Singapore. According to the Scheepvaart dated 7 September and the De locomotief dated 8 September she left on 2 September bound for Colombo.

Part of the Sharpshooter-class torpedo gunboats, preceded by Grasshopp-class, succeeded by Alarm-class, launched as Whiting at the shipyard of Armstrong Whitworth, Elswick, Tyne and Wear on 24 July 1889, renamed Boomerang on 24 April 1890, sold in July 1905, an armament of 2-4.7”/12cm quick firing guns, 4-3pd guns and 5-14”/36cm torpedo tubes.
