An item reported that enemy submarines attacked 2 convoys in the Windward Passage on 12-13 August sinking 2 cargo ships of one convoy and 1 of the other convoy. There were no other attacks reported. Since yesterday were among the new sinking reported 1-6,800 gross American tanker sunk on 13 August off the Mississippi Delta and 1-13,600 gross ton British cargo ship on 9 August around 600 miles west of northern Ireland. Both ships were proceeding independently.
An item reported that in the USA and the United Kingdom the new building of cargo ships in July of 613,000 gross tonnage exceeded with 20,000 tons the losses that same month of Allied and neutral cargo ships which was 591,000 gross tons. The figures of losses in July were the lowest since January 1942 with 406,000 gross tons. Losses in February 638,000 gross tons, March and April about 650,000 gross tons, May 706,000 gross tons and June 837,000 gross tons. It was believed that July would be 600,000-650,000 tons. The J.I.C. commented that it was a better solution to built more escort vessels as solution instead of replacing sunk cargo vessels by new building.
