Japanese transport Brazil Maru sunk according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 9 August 1942

An item reported that a American submarine sunk the Japanese 13,000 tons transport Brazil Maru in the Japanese Pacific Mandates area.(1)

1. Gross register tonnage 12.755 tons, deadweight 8.200 tons and as dimensions 516 x (waterline)-545 (over all) x 69 x 29 (loaded) feet. Speed 29 (normal cruising)-22 (maximum) knots. Twin screw. Diesel machinery supplying 16.500 bhp. Call sign JCZN. Official number 46463. Laid down by Mitsubishi Jugokyo K.K., Nagasaki, Japan for account of the Osaka Shosen K.K. on 31 October 1938, launched and baptized on 2 August 1939, completed on 23 December 1939, requisitioned by the Japanese navy on 4 September 1941, added to the Yokosuka Naval District to be used for transporting personnel and ammunition, converted into an auxiliary transport at the Yokosuka Naval Yard between 15 April and 5 May 1942 and sunk by the American submarine USS Greenling (SS-213) on 5 August 1942 on a distance of 150 miles north north west of Truk. Apparently she was then also to be converted into an aircraft carrier. USS Greenling, part of Gato-class diesel-electric submarines, preceded by Mackerel-class, succeeded by Balao-class. Laid down by Electric Boat Company, Groton, Connecticut, USA on 12 November 1940, launched on 20 September 1941, commissioned on 21 January 1942,  decommissioned on 16 October 1946, stricken on 1 March 1960 and sold to be broken up on 21 June 1960
