An item reported that in the First World War the US Navy laid 80% of the northern mine barrage stretching from the Orkyney Islands to Norway. In Scotland were 2 large assembly and testing plants for manufacturing mines established. Further more were new mines designed and mines shipped from the USA. The minelaying was down by US naval personnel using a squadron of US merchant ships converted into minelayers. One field of 5,520 mines was laid just within one hour.
