Spanish fishing fleet expanding and becoming modern according to the Commercial Fisheries Review dated August-September 1967 No. 8-9

An item reported that the Spanish distant-water fishing fleet continued to expand. In 1966 were 32 vessels each larger than 250 gross tons. The long-range freezer fleet was mainly off the South African coastline active. The landings grew with 46% to 195,000 metric tons. The coastal fishery was less successful with 1.100.000 metric tons ladings in 1966 about similar to a year earlier. A Government loan program was to stimulate creating a modern Spanish fishing fleet by 1970 able to catch yearly 1,500,000 metric tons.
