An item dated Honolulu, Hawaii, USA reported the arrival the same day of the American cruiser USS Houston(1) with on board the ashes of the at Washington deceased former Japanese ambassador Hirosi Saito. His widow and children arrived earlier with the steamship Tatuta Maru. (2) The cruiser was escorted by 2 destroyers and welcomed by a public numbering 1.500 persons.

Part of the Northampton-class heavy cruisers consisting of the Northampton, Chicago, Houston, Augusta, Louisville and Chester, preceded by the Pensacola-class and succeeded by the Portland-class.Building ordered on 18 December 1924, building awarded on 13 June 1927, laid down by Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia, USA on 1 May 1928, launched by Miss Elizabeth Holcombe on 7 September 1929, reclassified from CL-30 into CA-30 on 1 July 1931 and sunk in the Battle of Sunda Strait, Dutch East Indies against the Japanese navy on 1 March 1943.
2. His ashes were brought back to Japan by the USS Astoria. Ambassador in the USA 1934-until his death and involved in the renunciation by Japan in 1934 of the Washington Naval Treaty. (24 December 1886-26 February 1939).
