An item dated London, England 18 December referred to a statement of the British Admiralty reporting that the British submarine HMS Ursala (1) claimed to sunk a German cruiser of the Köln-class in the entrance of the Elbe river on Thursday 14 December, despite her escort of 6 German destroyers.(2) A second item made clear that another submarine sighted the Bremen, sunk a submarine and torpedoed a cruiser which arrived safely in the harbour. Berlin denied the sinking just admitting that on Tuesday a light cruiser was slightly damaged.

1. U-class submarine, preceded by T-class, succeeded by P611-class. Laid down by Vickers Armstrong, Barow-in-Furness, England on 19 February 1937, launched on 16 February 1938, commissioned on 20 December 1938, handed over to the Soviet Union, renamed V-4, given back early 1950 and broken up in May 1950.
2. It was the Leipzig which was allready damaged by the HMS Salmon, she escaped safely to the harbour. Of the Leipzig-class light cruisers, prededed by König-classs and to be succeeded by the planned but not realized M-class, laid down on 28 April 1928, launched on 18 October 1929, commissioned on 8 October 1931, heavy damaged after a collission in 1944, not repaired and scuttled in July 1946.
