An item reported that the US cabinet ordered to seize French ships in American harbours. In the meantime was the seizure ordered of 12 ships including the giant ocean liner Normandie. On board were American sailors stationed to prevent sabotage. The French sailors were not considered to be interned and had a limited freedom of movement.(1)

Laid down by Chantiers de Penhoet, Saint Nazaire, France on 26 January 1931, launched on 29 October 1932, completed in 1933, renamed USS Lafayette and classified as a transport AP-53, caught fire on 9 February 1942 and capsized during her conversion into a troop ship - plans for conversion into an aircraft carrier were dropped- and broken up in October 1946.
