US Coastguard seized French merchant ships according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf dated 13 December 1941

An item dated Stockholm, Sweden 13 December reported that the US Coastguard seized 12 French ships and arrested their crews. One of the ships being seized was the Normandie (1), which could be commissioned as an aircraft mother ship [other newspaper stating aircraft carrier]. At Mobile, USA was by the US Navy the French tanker Scheherazade seized and her crew of 40 men interned.

1. Laid down by Chantiers de Penhoet, Saint Nazaire, France on 26 January 1931, launched on 29 October 1932, completed in 1933, renamed USS Lafayette and classified as a transport AP-53, caught fire on 9 February 1942 and capsized during her conversion into a troop ship - plans for conversion into an aircraft carrier were dropped- and broken up in October 1946.
