Kawasaki Heavy Industries building Japanese submarine according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 1 October 1956

An item reported that Kawasaki Heavy Industries was ordered to built a submarine of 1,000 tons for the Japanese navy, the first submarine built after the Second World War. She was to be fitted out with a schnorkel. Completition was not to be expected before the end of the 1957-1958 Fiscal Year.(1)

1. Built under the 1956 Programme, the Oyashio, lid doen on 25 December 1957, launched on 25 May 1959 and completed on 30 June 1960. SS 511. Displacement 1,139 (surfaced)-1,420 (submerged) tons.
